The twin-turbo 4.0 V8 was added to the 6.0 W12 in the last generation, and now the basic engine is also featured in Continental’s third generation. But this is not the humiliating base of the “Octavia with a three-cylinder”, because this eight-cylinder has a lot of power, plenty of speed and a few other benefits on its side …
The choice of genuine gentlemen is still a sophisticated twelve-cylinder, because another engine in your elegant British Gran Turismo would probably be scorned by the golf club’s colleagues. But who does not care about the glitz and does not care what other people think about him, can easily reach for the eight-cylinder, because with him, Conti GT is just a better car. It was true in the past generation and it will certainly be true in this one.
The four-liter under-hood eight-cylinder engine is turbocharged and delivers 550 hp and 770 Nm of torque, which is no less than that produced by the W12 (635 hp and 900 Nm). The sleek GT with a fixed roof still manages to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.0 seconds (a GTC convertible one-tenth slower) and goes up to 318 km / h, so it is not lagging behind on W12 paper (3.7 s and 333 km) / h), they will be virtually as fast in real operation.
The advantage of the V8 is a few tens of pounds less weight, which does not sound too much for a 2.2 ton heavy car, but given that the diet was right over the front axle, it will know the driving characteristics – Conti V8 should be a bit more agile and willing to plunge into corners. It will also have a stronger sound. The W12 is rather dinstinged and roars like a well-behaved beast, while the V8 is a bit rude and can sputter into the exhaust.
In addition, this 8-cylinder is very clever – it can deactivate four of the eight cylinders at low load without the driver noticing. This saves fuel and, of course, also reduces emissions. The moment it is needed, but it can activate the shutter four cylinders and literally shoot forward. The rollers are disconnected and connected in 20 milliseconds. Similarly, the Start / Stop system works so quickly and smoothly that the driver does not even record it frequently.
The main advantage is the price: the price of the V8 version has not been published yet, but in the last generation it cost a few hundred thousand crowns less than W12. That now starts at some 4.5 million, so the V8 is likely to fit well below 4 million. Without an extra fee…
And of course there is a lot to pay for. Both the Continental GT and GTC are equipped with new 20-inch discs as standard, but customers can reach 22 inches if they are interested. There are 10 different design versions of the wheels to which Bentley has also added 7 interesting body paints. In addition, the new Continental GT will receive a subtle V8 design on the body and a menacing-looking exhaust system ending. However, they are not just for show, they can conjure up a rather interesting soundtrack, which is now almost a rarity.
Inside it is a classic Bentley. In all conceivable directions, electrically adjustable seats are upholstered in leather. Bentley knows that he has quite demanding customers, so he has a choice of four different upholstery and quilting colors. An interesting fact is that the seats are upholstered by Bentley manually. In the case of a convertible, the fabric roof can also be color matched to the body or interior. In this case, there are eight colors in the menu. In addition, Bentley has added a new 10-speaker system with a total power of 650 watts. This will surely satisfy even the most demanding music listeners.
Obviously, the novelty cannot be done without a large number of security assistants ranging from lane guarding to a column assistant or a parking assistant. If you have been tempted and you feel that you really need an eight-cylinder GT, then you have to patience with the fact that the news will only reach Europe in 2020.
