Elon Musk’s Tesla Has Unveiled A Pickup Truck Inspired By James Bond
Elon Musk’s company Tesla has unveiled a new futuristic pick-up truck called the Cybertruck, inspired by the James Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me.
Musk himself took to the stage in California for the grand unveiling and said that his design for the company’s first truck was ‘influenced’ by the popular spy film.
If you’re struggling to see the inspiration, Musk confirmed in advance that the car is supposed to remind us slightly of James Bond’s Lotus Esprit aquatic supercar.
Decide for yourself…
Whilst this car won’t be a seafaring vehicle, it is the first completely electric pickup truck that will be available in the United States.
That’s big news for those who want the USA to produce less carbon emissions. Currently the market is dominated by gigantic car firms like Ford, General Motors, and Fiat Chrysler, all who produce fossil fuel reliant cars.
At the launch event in Los Angeles – which was admittedly less grand than some other launches Musk has attended, given that nothing got blasted into space – the tech-billionaire said: “We need sustainable energy now. If we don’t have a pickup truck, we can’t solve it.
“The top 3 selling vehicles in America are pickup trucks. To solve sustainable energy, we have to have a pickup truck.”
A grand idea, that’s for sure.
However, the launch itself didn’t run exactly to plan.
During a demonstration in which metal balls were shot at the supposedly armoured glass windows, one of them cracked.
Why exactly someone driving a pickup truck might need armoured windows is anyone’s guess, but whatever.
Musk then confirmed that the production of the Cybertruck would start in two years and, once it arrives on the market, it will be available for a stated price of $39,000 (£31,000).
The car will fit six people in it, and have a range of over 500 miles on a charge. That’s despite the fact that it has a very heavy stainless steel body.
It’s nippy, too.
According to Musk, it’ll get from 0 – 60 in 2.9 seconds.
Musk continued: “Cybertruck is designed to have the utility of a truck and the performance of a sports car.
“The vehicle is built to be durable, versatile and capable, with exceptional performance both on-road and off-road.
“Cybertruck will come in three variants: Single Motor Rear-Wheel Drive, Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive, and Tri-Motor All-Wheel Drive.”
Well, we do need more electric cars out there, let’s hope this one lives up to the billing.
